Depending on market specifications and equipment level, the Volkswagen ID.4 may be equipped with a legally mandated eCall Emergency System. In many regions, especially within the EU, this system is activated by default and operates free of charge. The controls for the eCall system are located in the roof console of the Volkswagen ID.4 for quick and intuitive access.
The eCall Emergency System in the Volkswagen ID.4 is designed to provide immediate assistance in critical situations. When activated, it establishes a direct voice connection with a local emergency dispatch center. The operator communicates in the official language of the country where the vehicle is located, while essential emergency data such as the vehicle’s exact position is transmitted automatically to support rescue operations.
The data processing associated with the eCall system in the Volkswagen ID.4 complies with applicable legal frameworks, such as EU Regulation 2015/758. For more details, refer to information on data handling within the vehicle (→ Data processing in the vehicle).
The communication link is enabled through a dedicated control module installed by the manufacturer. To ensure functionality even after a severe collision, the Volkswagen ID.4 includes additional components such as an emergency microphone, speaker system, and an independent backup battery separate from the main electrical system.
Indicator light for the statutory eCall Emergency System
The indicator light shown in → fig. 1 (arrow) is integrated into the control panel of the Volkswagen ID.4. It displays different colors and blinking patterns depending on the current system status:
The indicator light is off: the emergency call function is not available.
The red indicator light flashes after ignition is switched on: the eCall system is deactivated.
The red indicator light remains on: system malfunction. The eCall Emergency System in the Volkswagen ID.4 is limited or unavailable.
The green indicator light is on: the emergency call system is active and ready for use.
The indicator light flashes green: an emergency call is currently in progress.
WARNING
The following conditions in the Volkswagen ID.4 may limit or prevent a manual or automatic emergency call:
Triggering an emergency call manually
1. Briefly press the protective cover and fold it downward → fig. 1.
2. Press and hold the emergency call button → fig. 2 until the green indicator light starts flashing.
The Volkswagen ID.4 will immediately initiate a call to the local emergency dispatch center.
If the emergency call is triggered accidentally, cancel it without delay:
1. Press the emergency call button again until the indicator light remains steadily green.
Only use the emergency call button in real emergency situations → fig. 2.
Automatic emergency call
The automatic emergency call function in the Volkswagen ID.4 is active only when the ignition is switched on.
In the event of a serious collision, such as when airbags or safety belt pretensioners are activated, or when systems like Emergency Assist intervene, the Volkswagen ID.4 automatically contacts the local emergency services.
This automatic call cannot be canceled by pressing the emergency call button → fig. 2.
If no response is received from vehicle occupants, emergency services will be dispatched automatically.
Integrated battery
The Volkswagen ID.4 is equipped with an integrated backup battery that ensures continued operation of the eCall Emergency System even if the 12 V battery fails or is disconnected.
If the integrated battery is defective or depleted, a warning message will appear in the instrument cluster. In such cases, contact an authorized Volkswagen service center immediately.
The integrated battery should be inspected and, if necessary, replaced approximately every three years by an authorized Volkswagen dealer.
Data transmission
During an emergency call, the Volkswagen ID.4 transmits legally required data to the local emergency dispatch center to support rescue operations.
The system stores only the most recent three location data points required for operation. Continuous tracking of the Volkswagen ID.4 is not possible.
All transmitted data is processed exclusively for emergency response purposes and is automatically deleted approximately 13 hours after the call.
The following data will be transmitted:
You may request access to or deletion of transmitted data by contacting the responsible emergency service center.
Installation of aftermarket infotainment systems may negatively affect the functionality of the eCall Emergency System in the Volkswagen ID.4.
Troubleshooting
Malfunction in the legally mandated eCall Emergency System
The red indicator light in the emergency button remains on in the Volkswagen ID.4
. The instrument cluster may also display:
Error: Emergency call function. Service vehicle.
This indicates a system fault, and the emergency call feature may not be available.
1. Contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer or service center immediately to resolve the issue.
Limited function in the legally mandated eCall Emergency System
The red indicator light remains on
and the following message may appear:
Emergency call function limited. Service vehicle.
In this case, the eCall Emergency System in the Volkswagen ID.4 is only partially functional, and voice communication may not be possible.
1. Have the system checked and repaired by an authorized Volkswagen service facility as soon as possible.
For maximum safety, Volkswagen recommends regular system checks to ensure that all emergency communication features in the Volkswagen ID.4 remain fully operational.
