Volkswagen ID.4: Replacing blown fuses

Preparations

1. Switch off the drive-ready mode in your Volkswagen ID.4 and deactivate all electrical consumers, including lights, infotainment, and climate systems, before starting any work on the fuse system.

1. Use a flashlight to illuminate the fuse panel for better visibility.

A blown fuse in the Volkswagen ID.4 can be identified visually through its transparent housing. The internal metal strip will appear melted or broken → fig. 1, indicating that the circuit has been interrupted.

Fuse versions

  • Standard flat connector fuse (ATO), commonly used in the Volkswagen ID.4.
  • Small flat connector fuse (MINI) for compact electrical circuits.
  • Large flat blade fuse (MAXI or MAXI+) for high-current systems.

Fuse color codes

Fuses (ATO - MINI - MAXI or MAXI+) in the Volkswagen ID.4 follow standardized color coding for quick identification.

Color - Current rating

Black - 1 A

Purple - 3 A

Orange - 5 A

Brown - 7.5 A

Red - 10 A

Blue - 15 A

Yellow - 20 A

White or clear - 25 A

Green - 30 A

Light green - 40 A

Replacing fuses

1. If necessary, remove the plastic fuse puller from the fuse box or its cover → fig. 2.

2. Position the appropriate section of the puller over the fuse, depending on its size and design, and grip it securely from above or from the side.

3. Carefully pull the fuse out of its socket.

4. If the fuse is defective, replace it with a new fuse of identical rating, color, and size to ensure proper function → Volkswagen ID.4 correct fuse replacement using identical rating and size.

5. After replacement, return the plastic puller to its holder inside the fuse box cover.

6. Close the fuse box securely to protect the electrical system of your Volkswagen ID.4.

NOTICE

Installing a fuse with a higher current rating than specified can damage the electrical system of the Volkswagen ID.4 and lead to further malfunctions.

  • Always replace fuses with identical specifications.

Introduction

For technical reasons, the Volkswagen ID.4 cannot be tow-started. If the vehicle cannot enter drive-ready mode due to a discharged 12 V battery, assistance from another vehicle’s battery may be used to restore functionality.

However, the electrical architecture of the Volkswagen ID.4 is not designed to supply power for jump-starting other vehicles → Volkswagen ID.4 warning against using vehicle to jump start others.

WARNING

Incorrect use of jumper cables in the Volkswagen ID.4 may cause the 12 V battery to explode, leading to severe injuries.

  • Always follow safety instructions before working with the 12 V battery.
  • Ensure correct identification of positive and negative terminals.
  • Never attempt to jump-start a vehicle with a frozen battery.

WARNING

Explosive gases may form around the 12 V battery during jump-start procedures. Sparks can ignite these gases and cause serious injuries.

  • Keep open flames, sparks, and heat sources away from the battery.
  • Avoid static electricity discharge near the battery.

NOTICE

The electrical system of the Volkswagen ID.4 is not designed to provide jump-start assistance to other vehicles.

  • Never use the Volkswagen ID.4 to jump-start another vehicle.

NOTICE

A discharged 12 V battery in the Volkswagen ID.4 may freeze at low temperatures and become permanently damaged.

  • Always replace frozen or thawed batteries immediately.
