Volkswagen ID.4: Preparing gas strut for disposal
Important
- Only gas struts that have been depressurised may be disposed
of.
CAUTION
Risk of injury caused by flying metal shavings.
Eyes and skin can suffer irritation or injuries.
- Put on safety goggles.
- Put on protective gloves.
- Saw or drill open gas strut -1- at notch -2-.
- Saw or drill open gas strut -1- at distance -a- measured from
edge of housing -3-.

Preparing covered gas strut for disposal
Covered gas strut is referred to hereafter simply as strut
CAUTION
Risk of eye injuries due to metal swarf.
Eye irritation and injury possible.
Note
Type of joint/step at left and right strut -2- depends on equipment/
version.
Cut open outer protective sleeve all around at a distance
of -dimension a- from the joint/step using a commercially
available angle grinder -arrow A-.
- Remove protective sleeve -2- in direction of -arrow B-.

- Place a cleaning cloth underneath to catch any escaping oil.
CAUTION
Risk of eye injuries due to metal swarf.
Eye irritation and injury possible.

Cover area around hole with cleaning cloth.
- Cut open/drill gas strut cylinder -2- at a distance of
-dimension b- -arrow-.
Clamp cylinder side of strut -1- in a commercially
available
vice -2-.
CAUTION
Risk of eye injuries due to metal swarf.
Eye irritation and injury possible.

- Cut open spring wire of compression spring -3- in longitudinal
direction -4- using commercially available angle grinder
until compression spring -3- is free of stress in longitudinal
direction -4-.
Important
- If the compression spring -3- is not free of stress after the
visible spring wire has been cut open, the compression
spring -3- must be cut open further, including cutting into
the remaining plastic tube.
