Limits of the sensor system

In the Volkswagen ID.4, the Side Assist system monitors surrounding traffic using radar sensors located in the rear section of the vehicle. These sensors continuously analyze the area behind and beside the Volkswagen ID.4 to support safer lane changes.

Always consider the limitations of the radar sensors (→ Sensor system). Even with advanced technology, drivers of the Volkswagen ID.4 must remain attentive and ready to react at all times.

Functional limitations

In addition to the general sensor limitations, Side Assist in the Volkswagen ID.4 may not accurately interpret traffic situations under certain conditions, including:

• When driving directly between two lanes without clear positioning.
• When lanes vary significantly in width.
• When roadside structures such as guard rails, barriers, or elevated objects interfere with sensor readings.

Restricted visibility

Bright sunlight or strong reflections can reduce the visibility of warning indicators in the exterior mirrors of the Volkswagen ID.4, potentially making alerts less noticeable.

Calibration

The radar sensors in the Volkswagen ID.4 perform an automatic calibration during the first kilometers after delivery and after any repair involving sensor components. During this calibration phase, the detection range and system performance may be temporarily reduced.
