Automatic safety belt retractor

The safety belts in the Volkswagen ID.4, including those for the driver, front passenger, and rear outer seats (and in some configurations the rear center seat), are equipped with an automatic belt retractor located in the shoulder section.

If the safety belt is pulled slowly or during normal driving, it can move freely to allow comfort and flexibility. However, the automatic retractor mechanism locks the belt immediately if it is pulled out suddenly, such as during emergency braking, sharp cornering, acceleration, or when driving on steep inclines.

In critical driving conditions, the Volkswagen ID.4 proactive passenger protection system can automatically tighten the front safety belts. This may occur during emergency braking or when the vehicle detects instability such as oversteer or understeer. If no accident occurs, the system relaxes the belts again once the situation stabilizes.

The proactive passenger protection system remains ready to activate again whenever needed, ensuring continuous safety support.

Safety belt pretensioners

The Volkswagen ID.4 is equipped with safety belt pretensioners for the front seats and, depending on the model configuration, also for the outer rear seats.

These pretensioners are activated by sensors in the event of severe frontal, side, or rear collisions, as well as during rollover situations. When triggered, they tighten the safety belts to remove slack and hold occupants firmly in place, reducing forward movement and improving protection.

The pretensioners work in coordination with the airbag system. In rollover accidents, they are activated if the Side Curtain Protection airbags deploy.

A small amount of fine dust may be released when airbags and pretensioners deploy. This is normal and does not indicate a fire hazard in the Volkswagen ID.4.

WARNING

Safety belt pretensioners in the Volkswagen ID.4 are designed for one-time use only. Once activated, the system must be replaced.

• Immediately replace any deployed safety belt pretensioners and associated components with new parts approved by Volkswagen.
• All repairs or modifications must only be carried out by qualified professionals with the appropriate tools and expertise.
• Never install used pretensioner components from scrap vehicles or recycled parts.
• Do not modify or tamper with any safety belt pretensioner components.

Reversible belt tensioning (proactive passenger protection system)

In certain driving scenarios, the Volkswagen ID.4 may apply reversible belt tensioning to prepare occupants for potential hazards. This feature improves positioning before a possible collision.

Typical situations include:

• Heavy or emergency braking.
• Loss of vehicle stability such as oversteer or understeer.
• Minor impacts or sudden evasive maneuvers.

After such events, the safety belts may remain slightly tensioned. To release the tension, unfasten and correctly refasten the belts while the vehicle is stationary.

Safety belt load limiter

The Volkswagen ID.4 is also equipped with safety belt load limiters for the front seats and outer rear seats, further enhancing occupant protection.

During a collision, these load limiters reduce the force exerted by the safety belts on the occupant’s body, minimizing the risk of injury while maintaining restraint effectiveness.
