Removing a wheel

When performing a wheel change on the Volkswagen ID.4, follow all safety instructions carefully to ensure a smooth and secure process.

1. Follow the recommended preparation checklist for the Volkswagen ID.4 (→ Wheel change).

2. Loosen the wheel bolts slightly before lifting the vehicle (→ Wheel bolts).

3. Raise the Volkswagen ID.4 using the approved vehicle jack (→ Vehicle jack).

4. Fully remove the loosened wheel bolts using the lug wrench → fig. 1 and place them on a clean, stable surface to avoid contamination.

5. Carefully remove the wheel from the hub.

Two-piece wheel bolts

The Volkswagen ID.4 is equipped with two-piece wheel bolts, where the bolt and head are loosely connected to ensure proper seating.

Never substitute these with single-piece wheel bolts. If there is any uncertainty about the correct type, consult an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility. Volkswagen strongly recommends using only approved components for safety and compatibility.

Installing a spare wheel or compact spare wheel

1. Check the direction of rotation of the tire before installation (→ Tire labeling and tire classifications).

2. Carefully position the replacement wheel onto the hub of the Volkswagen ID.4.

3. Install the anti-theft wheel bolt using the adapter and tighten it lightly in a clockwise direction.

On wheels equipped with full covers, ensure the anti-theft bolt is installed in the correct position → fig. 2 -2- or -3-, relative to the tire valve 1. Incorrect positioning may prevent proper installation of the wheel cover.

4. Insert the remaining wheel bolts and tighten them slightly in a clockwise direction.

5. Lower the Volkswagen ID.4 carefully using the vehicle jack.

6. Tighten all wheel bolts securely using the lug wrench → . Always tighten in a crisscross pattern rather than sequentially around the wheel to ensure even pressure distribution.

7. Reinstall the wheel caps or hubcap (→ Wheel covers) (→ Hubcap) (→ Wheel bolt caps).

After a wheel change

1. Clean the vehicle tool kit and store it properly in its designated foam holder in the luggage compartment of the Volkswagen ID.4.

2. Securely store the removed wheel in the luggage compartment to prevent movement during driving.

3. Have the tightening torque of the wheel bolts checked as soon as possible by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility. Volkswagen recommends professional verification for optimal safety.

4. Replace any damaged tires promptly to maintain safe driving conditions and optimal performance of the Volkswagen ID.4.

Wheel bolt tightening specification

The correct tightening torque for wheel bolts on the Volkswagen ID.4, whether using steel or aluminum alloy rims, is:

- 120 Nm (88 ft-lbs).

Wheel bolts that are corroded, difficult to turn, or damaged must be replaced. Additionally, ensure that the threads in the wheel hub are clean before torque verification.

Never apply grease or oil to the wheel bolts or hub threads, as this may affect tightening accuracy and lead to loosening during operation.

Always use a calibrated torque wrench to check the tightening torque immediately after changing a wheel.

WARNING

WARNING

• Always use the correct wheel bolts for the specific rim and Volkswagen ID.4 model.
• Never mix different types of wheel bolts.
• Vehicles equipped with two-piece wheel bolts must only use two-piece bolts.

The Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) indicator in the Volkswagen ID.4 may illuminate after a wheel has been replaced, indicating that the system requires recalibration or that a temporary malfunction has been detected (→ Tire Pressure Monitoring System).

The tire mobility set supplied with the Volkswagen ID.4 provides a practical and temporary solution for sealing minor tire damage caused by punctures or foreign objects up to approximately 4 mm in diameter. After the sealant has been injected into the tire, the Volkswagen ID.4 should be driven for approximately 10 minutes to allow the sealant to distribute evenly. Afterward, the tire pressure must be checked and adjusted if necessary to ensure safe driving conditions.

If more than one tire on the Volkswagen ID.4 is damaged, do not attempt to use the tire mobility set. Instead, contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility, as the system is designed to repair only a single tire.

Do not use the tire sealant:

• If the tire sealant has expired.

• Park the vehicle at a safe distance from traffic (→ In case of an emergency) (→ Parking).
• Ensure the vehicle is positioned on firm, level ground.
• Keep all passengers, especially children, away from the working area.
• Activate the hazard warning lights and place a warning triangle to alert other road users.
• Never lift the Volkswagen ID.4 with a jack when using the tire mobility set.

WARNING

A tire repaired using sealant will not perform the same as an undamaged tire.

Excessive stress on a repaired tire may result in tire failure, accidents, and serious injuries.

• Do not exceed 80 km/h (50 mph) when driving with a repaired tire on the Volkswagen ID.4.
• Avoid sudden acceleration, heavy braking, and sharp cornering.
• Drive no more than 10 minutes at reduced speed, then check the tire pressure again.
• Replace the repaired tire as soon as possible. The tire mobility set is intended only for emergency use to reach the nearest service facility.

CAUTION

The sealing compound may cause skin irritation or harm upon contact.

• If sealant comes into contact with skin, clean it immediately using a cloth or suitable material.
• Keep the tire mobility set out of reach of children.

Dispose of used or expired sealant from the Volkswagen ID.4 in accordance with local environmental regulations.

A replacement tire inflation bottle for the Volkswagen ID.4 can be obtained from an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.
