This ensures safe operation and optimal performance of the Volkswagen ID.4 charging system under different electrical conditions.

In certain regions such as Norway, charging cables supplied outside the country may not be compatible with local mains socket systems. Always verify compatibility before attempting to charge your Volkswagen ID.4.

Protective device

The Volkswagen ID.4 charging cable is equipped with advanced electronic safety features. These ensure that the charging connector remains de-energized until it is securely connected to the vehicle’s charging port, significantly reducing the risk of electric shock.

Self-test

When the charging cable is connected to a GFI (ground fault interrupter) outlet, the integrated protective device automatically performs a self-test. This is an essential safety function of the Volkswagen ID.4 charging system.

During this process, all indicator lights illuminate briefly and then switch off in sequence. After the test is complete, the system displays the current operating status clearly through the LED indicators.

Status indicators

One or more green LEDs on the protective device illuminate → fig. 2 -1-, -2- or -3-, indicating the current charging status of your Volkswagen ID.4.

Display and Meaning

• 1 comes on: The Volkswagen ID.4 charging cable is connected to the mains supply but not yet to the vehicle.
• 1, 2 come on, 3 blinks: The high-voltage battery of the Volkswagen ID.4 is actively charging.
• 1, 2 and 3 come on: The charging process is complete and the Volkswagen ID.4 battery is fully charged.

Setting the charging current

The Volkswagen ID.4 charging cable automatically adjusts the charging current according to the available power supply. This helps protect both the vehicle and the electrical installation.

If the local electrical infrastructure cannot support maximum charging power, the charging current can be reduced via the infotainment system settings of the Volkswagen ID.4 (see delayed charging options), depending on vehicle configuration.

Temperature monitoring

The charging cable for the Volkswagen ID.4 includes a built-in temperature monitoring system. If excessive heat is detected—for example due to prolonged sun exposure or storage in a hot luggage compartment—the system will intervene.

If charging is interrupted due to overheating, the status indicator disappears and one green LED begins blinking, while the red warning light flashes → fig. 2 -4-.

1. Disconnect the charging cable and allow it to cool sufficiently.

2. If the issue persists, consult a qualified specialist. Volkswagen recommends contacting an authorized Volkswagen dealer or service partner.

If only the red warning light → fig. 2 -4- flashes while the status indicator remains active, the Volkswagen ID.4 continues charging at a reduced current. Once the cable cools down, the charging current is automatically restored.

Fault displays

If the red warning light → fig. 2 -4- flashes or remains on without any of the green indicators → fig. 2 -1-, -2- or -3- lighting up continuously, a malfunction has occurred.

Display and Meaning

1. 1 blinks, 4 comes on or blinks: Power supply fault affecting the Volkswagen ID.4 charging process.
2. 2 blinks, 4 comes on or blinks: Safety system malfunction in the charging cable.
3. 3 blinks, 4 comes on or blinks: Vehicle-side issue detected in the Volkswagen ID.4.

The charging process will be stopped or interrupted to protect the system.

1. Carefully read the information provided on the protective device.

2. If the malfunction persists, contact a qualified technician. Volkswagen recommends visiting an authorized Volkswagen service center.

In some situations, charging the Volkswagen ID.4 via a mains socket may not be possible, especially if other electrical connections are active or if the vehicle is located near strong electromagnetic sources such as high-voltage lines. Additional factors include:

• A 12 V battery charger connected to the vehicle electrical system.
• Contact with external electrically powered equipment, such as lifting platforms.

Introduction

Loose equipment such as a tire mobility kit, spare wheel, compact spare wheel, or tools may become dangerous projectiles inside the Volkswagen ID.4 during sudden maneuvers or collisions, potentially causing severe injuries.

• Always securely fasten all tools and equipment in the luggage compartment of your Volkswagen ID.4.

Placement

The Volkswagen ID.4 offers several storage options for the vehicle tool kit, including under the luggage compartment floor or within side compartments. These locations are designed for both accessibility and safety.

Depending on the equipment version, your Volkswagen ID.4 may include an additional removable tool kit box in the luggage compartment. This is typically intended for seasonal tire changes and does not always need to be carried in the vehicle.

After use, ensure that the vehicle jack is fully lowered and securely stored in its designated position within the Volkswagen ID.4 to prevent movement while driving.
