Volkswagen ID.4: Functions of the electric drivetrain

Volkswagen ID.4 2021-2026 (E21) Owner's Manual / Functions of the electric drivetrain

Power output of the electric drivetrain

In the Volkswagen ID.4, the electric drivetrain delivers maximum torque instantly as soon as the accelerator pedal is pressed. This immediate response ensures smooth acceleration and a dynamic driving experience, making the Volkswagen ID.4 highly efficient and responsive in both urban and highway conditions.

Brake energy recuperation

During braking, the Volkswagen ID.4 converts kinetic energy into electrical energy through its regenerative braking system, storing this energy in the high-voltage battery (→ Energy recuperation). This process also occurs, to a lesser extent, when coasting or driving downhill, contributing to improved efficiency and extended driving range.

The level of brake energy recuperation — and therefore the engine braking effect — decreases as the battery charge increases. When the high-voltage battery in the Volkswagen ID.4 is fully charged, recuperation is no longer possible and the engine braking effect is absent → Volkswagen ID.4 regenerative braking limitation indicator full battery.

You can monitor the energy recuperation process directly in the instrument cluster or via the Infotainment system display of the Volkswagen ID.4.

Crawling feature

The crawling function in the Volkswagen ID.4 allows the vehicle to move slowly forward or backward at approximately 5 km/h (3 mph) without pressing the accelerator pedal, providing greater convenience in parking or maneuvering situations.

This function is automatically active:

  • When the drive system is active and the D/B gear is selected.

Or: when reverse gear R is engaged.

The crawling feature is automatically deactivated:

  • When the selector is set to N.

Or: when the electronic parking brake Volkswagen ID.4 electronic parking brake symbol is activated.

WARNING

The Volkswagen ID.4 produces minimal noise during operation. As a result, pedestrians, cyclists, and children may not hear the vehicle approaching, especially in low-speed areas or when reversing. This increases the risk of accidents and serious injuries.

  • Always remain aware that other road users may not detect your vehicle.

WARNING

If a gear is engaged, the Volkswagen ID.4 may move unintentionally. This can lead to accidents and serious injuries.

  • Always keep the brake pedal pressed when the vehicle is ready to drive and a gear (D/B or R) is engaged.

WARNING

As the battery charge increases, the regenerative braking effect decreases and may disappear entirely. This changes braking behavior and can lead to hazardous situations.

  • Reduce speed before driving on steep descents.
  • Use the brake system actively when traveling downhill for extended periods.
