Notes on installing a child restraint

When installing a child restraint in the Volkswagen ID.4, carefully follow these important recommendations. These guidelines apply to all types of securing systems and help ensure maximum safety for child passengers.

• Always read and follow the instructions provided by the child restraint manufacturer → .
• Whenever possible, install the child restraint on the rear seat behind the front passenger so that children can exit the Volkswagen ID.4 safely on the side away from traffic.
• Adjust the safety belt height so that the belt lies naturally against the child restraint without sharp bends. For rear-facing seats, use the lowest belt height adjustment.
• Before installing a rear-facing child seat on the front passenger seat of the Volkswagen ID.4, always switch off the front passenger front airbag.
• If installation on the front passenger seat is necessary, move the seat fully rearward and raise it to the highest possible position. Ensure the backrest is upright (→ Mechanical front seat).
• Always leave sufficient space around the child restraint and, if necessary, adjust the position of adjacent seats.

  Ensure that both the driver and front passenger maintain a correct seating position at all times (→ Seating position).

• The child seat backrest should be positioned as close as possible to the vehicle seat backrest. Adjust the angle of the vehicle seat so the child restraint rests fully against it. If the head restraint interferes, raise or remove it and store it securely in the Volkswagen ID.4.
• After installing the child restraint, do not change the seat settings. If adjustments are made, the installation must be checked and corrected if necessary.
• Do not use seat functions such as seat heating or massage for seats where a child restraint is installed in the Volkswagen ID.4.

Important airbag warning labels are placed in various locations throughout the Volkswagen ID.4. Their content may differ depending on regional regulations. These labels are typically located:

• On the driver and front passenger sun visors → fig. 1.
• On the passenger-side B-pillar → fig. 2.

Dangers when transporting children on the front passenger's seat

In the Volkswagen ID.4, using a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat can be extremely dangerous if the airbag deploys → .

Rear-facing child seats may only be used on the front passenger seat if the front passenger airbag is deactivated. The yellow PASSENGER AIR BAG indicator light must remain illuminated in the driver’s field of vision to confirm deactivation.

In some countries, it is not possible to deactivate the front passenger airbag in the Volkswagen ID.4 (→ Airbag system).

When using a forward-facing child seat, do not deactivate the airbag. Instead, position the child seat as far away from the airbag as possible. If the airbag deploys, it can still cause injuries → .

Not all child seats are approved for use in the front passenger seat. Only use models that are specifically authorized by the manufacturer for vehicles equipped with front and side airbags. Authorized Volkswagen dealers can provide a list of compatible child restraints for the Volkswagen ID.4.

Using a rear-facing child restraint on the front passenger seat of the Volkswagen ID.4 significantly increases the risk of severe or fatal injury in the event of a collision.

• Never use a rear-facing child seat if the front passenger airbag is active.
• Deactivate the airbag before installation. If deactivation is not possible, do not use the front passenger seat for a rear-facing child restraint.
• Move the front passenger seat as far back as possible to maximize distance from the airbag.
• Ensure the seat backrest is in an upright position.
• Adjust the safety belt routing to ensure it lies smoothly along the child restraint.
• Use only child restraints approved for use with front and side airbags in the Volkswagen ID.4.

Incorrect installation of a child restraint in the Volkswagen ID.4 can increase the risk of injury.

To reduce injury risk when side airbags or Side Curtain Protection deploy in the Volkswagen ID.4:

• Ensure that children are not within the deployment zones of airbags.
• Do not place any objects within these deployment zones.
