Volkswagen ID.4: Types of child restraints

Only use child restraints that are legally approved and suitable for the child using them in the Volkswagen ID.4.

Child restraint standards

In many regions, child restraints must comply with ECE-R 44 or ECE-R 129 regulations. Both standards are currently valid. Approved child restraints feature an orange ECE certification label that includes essential information such as:

  • Weight class
  • Size class
  • Approval category (universal, semi-universal, vehicle-specific, or i-Size)
  • Certification number

For ECE-R 44 approved seats, the certification number must begin with 03 or 04. Older models starting with 01 or 02 are no longer permitted.

Volkswagen ID.4 child restraint comparison and positioning examples

  • Weight class 0/0+: Rear-facing infant seats are ideal from birth up to approximately 18 months.
  • Weight class 1: Suitable up to around 4 years, or group 1/2 up to approximately 7 years, often with integrated harness systems.
  • Weight classes 2/3: Include booster seats with or without backrests. Child restraints with backrests offer improved protection compared to backless boosters, and Volkswagen recommends their use.

Child restraints in group 2 are typically suitable up to around 7 years, while group 3 is designed for older children.

For children taller than 100 cm (approx. 3 ft 3 in), always use the appropriate belt routing system and additional attachment points where available.

Not every child restraint fits every child or vehicle. Always verify that the child seat fits correctly in your Volkswagen ID.4 and that the child is properly secured.

Child restraints according to approval categories

Child restraints can be categorized as "universal", "semi-universal", "vehicle-specific", or "i-Size" depending on their certification:

  • Universal: Approved for installation in most vehicles without requiring a compatibility list. ISOFIX systems must also be secured with a top tether.
  • Semi-universal: Require additional safety features and must be tested for specific vehicle models listed by the manufacturer.
  • Vehicle-specific: Designed and tested for individual vehicle models, including the Volkswagen ID.4.
  • i-Size: Compliant with ECE-R 129, offering enhanced safety and standardized compatibility. Check with manufacturers for compatibility with the Volkswagen ID.4.
