Automatic dimming interior rearview mirror

In the Volkswagen ID.4, the automatic dimming interior rearview mirror enhances driving comfort by reducing glare from vehicles behind. When the ignition is switched on, integrated sensors measure incoming light from both the rear → fig. 1 -1- and the front → fig. 1 -2-.

Based on these measurements, the mirror automatically darkens to reduce glare, improving visibility and reducing eye strain during nighttime driving.

If the sensors are obstructed or their function is impaired—for example by sunshades, accessories, or mounted devices—the automatic dimming feature in the Volkswagen ID.4 may not function correctly. Devices such as navigation systems mounted near the mirror can interfere with sensor performance → .

In certain situations, such as when reverse gear is engaged, the automatic dimming function is temporarily deactivated to provide maximum rear visibility.

WARNING

Bright displays from mobile navigation systems or other devices in the Volkswagen ID.4 may interfere with the automatic dimming mirror function.

This can make it difficult to accurately judge the distance of vehicles behind and may lead to accidents with serious or fatal consequences.

• Switch off or reposition such devices if they interfere with mirror visibility.

For optimal safety in the Volkswagen ID.4, regularly check mirror alignment, keep all reflective surfaces clean, and ensure that no objects obstruct the sensors or your field of vision.
