Volkswagen ID.4: Limitations of the proactive passenger protection system

In the Volkswagen ID.4, the proactive passenger protection system is designed to enhance occupant safety, but its availability and performance depend on local regulations, system status, and driving conditions. As a result, the system may not always function fully or may be temporarily limited.

The proactive passenger protection system in the Volkswagen ID.4 is not available or may only operate with limited functionality in the following situations:

• Malfunction of the Electronic Stability Control (ESC), reversible safety belt pretensioning, or the airbag control module.
• ASR (traction control) is deactivated or ESC functionality is restricted.
• System faults or limitations in Autonomous Emergency Braking (Front Assist).
• System faults or limitations in Emergency Assist.
• Reverse gear is engaged.
• Presence of reflective or disruptive environmental factors such as guard rails, tunnel entrances, heavy rain, or icy conditions.
• Detection of animals or objects that are difficult for sensors to recognize accurately.

Troubleshooting

A message is briefly shown in the instrument cluster display.

• In the Volkswagen ID.4, this message indicates that the proactive passenger protection system is currently limited or temporarily unavailable. Switch the drive system off and then restart it.
• If the issue persists, contact an authorized Volkswagen dealer or Volkswagen Service Facility to have the system inspected. Volkswagen recommends professional diagnostics to ensure proper functionality.

In the Volkswagen ID.4, airbags are designed to supplement safety belts, not replace them. Safety belts must always be worn to ensure maximum protection.

Airbags can only provide their full protective effect when all safety systems in the Volkswagen ID.4 are correctly adjusted and used, including seats, safety belts, head restraints, and the steering wheel position for the driver.

It is important to understand that airbags do not deploy in every collision scenario, even if visible damage to the vehicle occurs.

Situations where airbags may not deploy in the Volkswagen ID.4 include:

• If the ignition is switched off at the moment of impact.
• Minor frontal collisions.
• Non-severe side impacts.
• Rear-end collisions.
• Rollover events where the detected rotational forces are below the activation threshold.
• Low-speed collisions.

Even when airbags deploy, they cannot completely prevent all injuries, such as bruising, abrasions, swelling, or minor burns.

WARNING

Objects located between vehicle occupants and the airbag deployment zone in the Volkswagen ID.4 can significantly increase the risk of injury.

During sudden braking, sharp maneuvers, or a collision, these objects may move into the deployment area and be propelled through the interior if the airbag activates.

• Never hold objects in your hands or place them on your lap while driving.
• Do not transport objects on the front passenger seat.

WARNING

Once deployed, airbags in the Volkswagen ID.4 lose their protective function and must be replaced immediately.

• Replace deployed airbags and all affected components only with original Volkswagen-approved parts.
• All repairs must be carried out by qualified professionals using proper diagnostic equipment and procedures.
• Never install used airbag components from scrap or recycled vehicles.
• Do not modify or tamper with any airbag system components.

WARNING

When airbags deploy in the Volkswagen ID.4, fine dust and water vapor may be released. This is normal and does not indicate a fire.

However, this dust may irritate the skin, eyes, or respiratory system, particularly for individuals with asthma or other sensitivities.

• If possible, leave the vehicle or ventilate the interior by opening windows or doors.

WARNING

Using cleaning agents that contain solvents on surfaces near airbag installation points in the Volkswagen ID.4 can damage materials and increase injury risk.

• Never clean the instrument panel or surrounding areas with solvent-based cleaners.
