Volkswagen ID.4: Monitoring the tread depth

Tread depth

Safe driving with the Volkswagen ID.4 requires sufficient tire tread depth. Ideally, all tires — or at least those on the same axle — should have evenly distributed tread depth → Volkswagen ID.4 tire tread depth check grooves wet winter safety. This is especially critical when driving on wet, icy, or snowy roads.

In many countries, the legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 mm (1/16 inch), measured within the main tread grooves near the wear indicators. Always follow the legal requirements applicable in your country when operating the Volkswagen ID.4.

For winter and all-season tires, stricter minimum tread depth requirements may apply. Maintaining deeper tread improves traction and safety in adverse weather conditions.

Tire wear

Tire wear on the Volkswagen ID.4 depends on several important factors:

  • Driving style and acceleration behavior.
  • Wheel balancing accuracy.
  • Suspension and wheel alignment.

Unbalanced wheels may cause vibrations in the steering wheel and lead to uneven tire wear. If such symptoms occur, the wheels on the Volkswagen ID.4 should be balanced immediately.

Incorrect wheel alignment can significantly reduce driving safety and accelerate tire wear. If uneven wear is detected, have the alignment checked by an authorized Volkswagen dealer or authorized Volkswagen Service Facility.

Tire Wear when Driving with a Sporty Driving Style

A sporty driving style in the Volkswagen ID.4, including fast cornering, strong acceleration, and hard braking, increases tire wear significantly.

If you frequently drive in this manner, it is recommended to check tire tread depth every 5000 to 10,000 km (approx. 3100 to 6200 miles) to ensure continued safety and performance.

The tread wear indicators are positioned at a height of 1.6 mm (1/16 inch) above the base of the tread → fig. 1. Their locations are marked on the sidewalls of the tires.

When the tread depth reaches the level of these indicators, the tires on the Volkswagen ID.4 must be replaced immediately to maintain safe driving conditions.

Always check all tread grooves when measuring tire wear to ensure accurate assessment.

WARNING

Worn tires significantly reduce the ability to control the Volkswagen ID.4 and increase braking distances.

They also greatly increase the risk of skidding and hydroplaning, especially on wet roads.

This can result in serious accidents or fatal injuries.

  • Replace tires as soon as they reach the tread wear indicator limit.
