Activating and deactivating the rain/light sensor

1. Move the windshield wiper lever to the desired position → fig. 1.

Automatic wiping in the Volkswagen ID.4 can also be enabled or disabled via the Infotainment system (→ Vehicle settings menu).

If automatic wiping is turned off in the system settings, the wiper intervals will operate in fixed stages instead of adapting dynamically.

Adjusting the sensitivity of the rain/light sensor

The sensitivity of the rain/light sensor in the Volkswagen ID.4 can be manually adjusted using the control switch on the wiper lever → fig. 1 -1-, → .

• Move the switch to the right for higher sensitivity (wipers react faster).
• Move the switch to the left for lower sensitivity (wipers react slower).

WARNING

The rain/light sensor in the Volkswagen ID.4 may not detect all types of precipitation accurately.

Reduced visibility due to insufficient wiping can lead to accidents with serious or fatal consequences.

• If visibility is impaired, always activate the windshield wipers manually.

Some rain/light sensor settings can be stored in driver personalization profiles and automatically applied when switching profiles.

Troubleshooting

Washer fluid level too low

The yellow warning indicator lights up.

1. Refill the washer fluid reservoir in your Volkswagen ID.4 (→ Washer fluid).

Windshield wiper malfunction

The yellow indicator light appears.

The windshield wipers in the Volkswagen ID.4 are not functioning correctly.

1. Switch the ignition off and then back on.

2. If the issue persists, contact a qualified technician or authorized Volkswagen service center.

Rain/light sensor malfunction

The yellow indicator light illuminates.

In this case, the automatic wiping function of the Volkswagen ID.4 will not activate even in rain conditions.

1. Restart the ignition.

2. If the malfunction continues, seek professional assistance.

Changes to rain/light sensor reaction

Various external factors may influence how the rain/light sensor in the Volkswagen ID.4 behaves or lead to incorrect operation:

• Damaged wiper blades: may leave streaks or water film, affecting sensor performance and causing irregular wiping cycles.
• Insects: impacts on the windshield may trigger unintended wiping.
• Salt residue: winter road salt can cause continuous or excessive wiping even when the windshield is nearly dry.
• Dirt or contamination: dust, wax residues, or car wash chemicals can reduce sensor sensitivity. Regular cleaning of the sensor area is recommended (→ Vehicle care exterior).
• Windshield damage: chips or cracks in the sensor area can alter detection accuracy and affect system behavior.

If an obstruction is detected on the windshield, the wipers in the Volkswagen ID.4 will attempt to clear it. If the obstruction persists, the system will stop the wipers to prevent damage.

1. Remove any obstruction and reactivate the windshield wipers.

For optimal performance of the rain/light sensor in the Volkswagen ID.4, always keep the windshield clean, maintain the wiper blades in good condition, and ensure that the sensor area remains unobstructed.
