Volkswagen ID.4: Swiveling out the ball mount

The trailer hitch ball mount in the Volkswagen ID.4 is integrated into the rear bumper and features an electrically released mechanism. Once released, the ball mount is deployed mechanically for use and cannot be removed from the vehicle, ensuring both convenience and security.

Releasing and swiveling out the ball mount

1. Park the Volkswagen ID.4 securely on a level surface.

2. Open the trunk lid.

3. Briefly pull the → fig. 1 button located in the luggage compartment.

The ball mount is electrically released and automatically begins to swivel outward. The indicator light integrated into the button flashes during this process.

4. Continue guiding the ball mount until you clearly hear and feel it lock into place. The indicator light will then remain continuously illuminated.

5. Close the trunk lid.

Swiveling in the ball mount

1. Park the Volkswagen ID.4 safely.

2. Remove the trailer and disconnect all electrical connections between the vehicle and the trailer. Also remove any adapter from the trailer socket.

3. Open the trunk lid.

4. Briefly pull the → fig. 1 button again.

The ball mount is released electrically.

5. Manually swivel the ball mount underneath the bumper until it audibly and securely engages. The indicator light will illuminate continuously.

6. Close the trunk lid.

Meaning of the indicator light in the button

• The indicator light in the button → fig. 1 is illuminated continuously while the trunk lid is open: The ball mount of the Volkswagen ID.4 is correctly locked in position (either deployed or retracted).
• The indicator light is flashing: The ball mount has not fully engaged or there may be a malfunction → .
• The indicator light switches off approximately one minute after the trunk lid is closed.

Securing cables

In many countries, trailers—both braked and unbraked—must be additionally secured with a breakaway or safety cable when attached to the Volkswagen ID.4.

1. Attach the securing or breakaway cable to the designated eyelet on the ball mount.

2. Route the cable through the eyelet and secure it using a karabiner hook → .

• If the diameter of the ball mount is less than 49 mm (1.9 inches) at its narrowest point, do not use the hitch.

• Do not attempt to assist or interfere with the swiveling mechanism using tools or external force.
• Never press the button while a trailer, bike rack, or any attachment is connected to the ball mount.

WARNING

An incorrectly secured trailer may detach and cause severe accidents or fatal injuries.

• Never place the securing or breakaway cable loosely over the ball mount.

NOTICE

Improper cleaning methods may damage seals or remove essential lubrication from the ball mount mechanism.

• Avoid directing high-pressure water or steam jets directly at the swiveling ball mount or trailer socket of the Volkswagen ID.4.

In extremely low temperatures, the ball mount of the Volkswagen ID.4 may not deploy properly. In such cases, move the vehicle into a warmer environment, such as a garage, to restore functionality.
