Volkswagen ID.4 Owners & Service Manuals

Volkswagen ID.4: Towing

If none of the restrictions apply, the Volkswagen ID.4 may only be pushed or towed on all four wheels in emergency situations. This is limited to very short distances—walking speed and no more than approximately 100 meters → Volkswagen ID.4 short distance towing to tow truck at walking speed.

WARNING

If the message “Towing damages the electrical system. Owner's manual!” appears in the Volkswagen ID.4 instrument cluster, continuing to tow the vehicle may cause drivetrain vibrations or wheel lock-up, especially on slippery surfaces. This can lead to loss of control and serious or fatal injuries.

  • If this warning appears, only tow or push the vehicle in absolute emergencies.

Always secure towing equipment only at approved attachment points on the Volkswagen ID.4:

  • Towing eye.
  • Trailer hitch ball mount (if equipped).

WARNING

Incorrectly attaching tow ropes or tow bars to the Volkswagen ID.4 can damage critical components and increase the risk of accidents.

  • Always use only designated towing points.
  • Never attach towing equipment to suspension or axle components.
  • If unsure, have the vehicle transported by a professional towing service.

Preparations

  • Ensure that the tow rope used for the Volkswagen ID.4 is not twisted, as this could lead to detachment during towing.
  • Switch on the ignition and hazard warning lights in both vehicles, unless prohibited by local regulations.
  • Carefully read and follow the towing instructions provided in the owner's manual of the assisting vehicle.

Towing vehicle (front)

1. Begin driving only once the tow rope is fully tensioned.

2. Accelerate smoothly and avoid sudden movements.

3. Avoid abrupt braking or sharp steering maneuvers.

4. Never exceed the permitted towing capacity.

Vehicle being towed (rear)

1. Keep the ignition switched on in the Volkswagen ID.4 to prevent the steering lock from engaging and to allow the use of indicators and wipers. Note that brake assistance and power steering are limited, requiring increased effort.

2. Ensure the vehicle key remains inside the Volkswagen ID.4 throughout the towing process.

3. Set the transmission to neutral (N).

4. Deactivate the anti-roll function if applicable.

Alternatively, the driver should remain seated, wearing a seat belt, with the driver’s door closed at all times.

5. Ensure that the electronic parking brake is fully released during towing → Volkswagen ID.4 electronic parking brake release during towing procedure.

6. Maintain constant tension on the tow rope to avoid sudden jerks.

NOTICE

If the electronic parking brake engages during towing of the Volkswagen ID.4, the wheels may lock, causing serious damage to the vehicle.

  • Stop towing immediately if this occurs.
  • Seek assistance from an authorized Volkswagen service facility.

NOTICE

If the 12 V battery charge in the Volkswagen ID.4 is insufficient, the electronic parking brake and steering lock cannot be released, which may result in vehicle damage during towing.

  • If necessary, activate drive-ready mode or perform a jump-start to restore functionality.
  • If the issue persists, have the vehicle transported using a tow truck.
