Volkswagen ID.4: Instructions for towing

When towing the Volkswagen ID.4, the vehicle retains certain signaling functions. Even if the emergency flashers are active, turn signals can still be used to indicate direction changes. With the ignition switched on, simply activate the turn signal lever in the desired direction. During this time, the hazard warning lights will pause and automatically resume once the lever returns to its neutral position, ensuring clear communication with other road users.

When may this vehicle not be towed?

The Volkswagen ID.4 must not be towed under the following conditions, as this may lead to severe system damage or unsafe driving situations:

• If the 12 V vehicle battery is completely discharged.
• If a red warning light appears → and the message “Towing: Damaged e-system - see manual!” is shown in the instrument cluster.
• If the 12 V electrical system cannot be reliably powered.

• If the towing distance exceeds approximately 50 km (30 miles).
• If the driving mode selector cannot be set to neutral (position N).
• If the anti-roll function cannot be deactivated.
• If the electronic parking brake cannot be released.
• If the steering lock cannot be disengaged.
• If, after an accident, proper wheel clearance or steering functionality cannot be guaranteed.
