Removing and installing airbag control unit [J234]

Removing and installing airbag control unit [J234], left-hand drive vehicles

Special tools and workshop equipment required

• ratchet ring attachment - VAS 262 015-

The airbag control unit - J234- will henceforth be referred to as "airbag control unit".

Removing

• Disconnect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.

  gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .

Vehicles with tunnel support cover

•  Remove tunnel support cover ⇒ General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr. 70 ; Dash panel; Removing and installing tunnel support cover .

All vehicles (continued)

• Fold back floor covering in area of airbag control unit.

CAUTION

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.

Risk of injury

• Discharge static electricity by briefly touching door striker plate.

• Release safety latch -4- in direction of -arrow A-, and open latch -5- in direction of -arrow B-.
• Disconnect electrical connector.
• Unscrew nuts -3-.
• Loosen nut -1- using ratchet ring attachment - VAS 262 015- .

NOTICE

Risk of damage to airbag control unit. Electrical connectors corrode when exposed to moisture.

• After unplugging connectors for control unit, cover them or seal them off to prevent moisture from entering.

• Detach airbag control unit -2- from studs, and remove it towards front passenger side.

Installing

Install in reverse order of removal, observing the following:

• Connect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.

  gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .

CAUTION

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.

Risk of injury.

• Stay as far back as possible from pyrotechnic components when switching on the ignition.

• Switch on ignition.
• Read and clear event memory using ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester.

If airbag control unit - J234- has been renewed:

• Perform function "Conclude commissioning" with ⇒ Vehicle diagnostic tester ⇒ Rep. gr. 00 ; Access to diagnoses .

Removing and installing airbag control unit J234, right-hand drive vehicles

Special tools and workshop equipment required

• ratchet ring attachment - VAS 262 015-

The airbag control unit - J234- will henceforth be referred to as "airbag control unit".

Removing

• Remove front seats ⇒ Rep. gr. 72 ; Removing and installing front seat .
• Remove front sill panel mouldings ⇒ Rep. gr. 70 ; Removing and installing front sill panel moulding .
•  Remove lower A-pillar trims ⇒ Rep. gr. 70 ; Removing and installing lower A-pillar trim .
• Remove tunnel support cover ⇒ Rep. gr. 70 ; Removing and installing tunnel support cover .
• Disconnect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.

  gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .

• Lift up floor covering slightly between front and rear screw connections of front seats.
• Pull floor covering back sufficiently to enable access to airbag control unit.

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.

Risk of injury

• Release safety latch -4- in direction of -arrow A-, and open latch -5- in direction of -arrow B-.
• Disconnect electrical connector.
• Unscrew nuts -3-.
• Loosen nut -1- using ratchet ring attachment - VAS 262 015- .

Installing

• Connect battery earth cable ⇒ Electrical system; Rep.

  gr. 27 ; Battery; Disconnecting and connecting battery .

CAUTION

It is possible to trigger pyrotechnic components unintentionally.

Risk of injury.

• Stay as far back as possible from pyrotechnic components when switching on the ignition.
