Volkswagen ID.4: Automatic trunk lid closing Easy Close

The Easy Close function in the Volkswagen ID.4 allows convenient hands-free closing of the trunk lid when a valid vehicle key is detected near the rear of the vehicle.

You can only activate the Easy Close feature in the Volkswagen ID.4 if a valid remote control key is within range of the trunk lid sensors.

1. Position your foot behind the center of the rear bumper.

2. Quickly move your lower leg toward the bumper → fig. 1.

3. Pull your leg away again immediately.

Once activated, Easy Close remains active for approximately 20 seconds. A chime confirms that the Volkswagen ID.4 has recognized the gesture.

The trunk lid will automatically close once all valid keys move away from the detection area of the Volkswagen ID.4.

If the Volkswagen ID.4 was previously locked and no valid key remains inside, the trunk lid will lock automatically after closing.

The Easy Close system allows locking of only one key inside the luggage compartment to prevent accidental lockout scenarios.

If a key returns into the detection range during closing, the process is interrupted and the trunk lid will reopen for safety.

Activating or deactivating the Easy Close function

The Easy Close feature in the Volkswagen ID.4 is linked with the Easy Open system and can be configured via the Infotainment system in the Vehicle menu.

The Easy Close function is available only when Keyless Access is enabled in the Volkswagen ID.4.

The Easy Close function may be triggered unintentionally in the following situations:

• When charging cables are moved near the rear bumper of the Volkswagen ID.4.
• If sweeping movements occur beneath the bumper.
• When exposed to strong water jets or steam.
• During maintenance or repair work near the rear bumper.
• If nearby objects such as gates move close to the bumper.

CAUTION

If a valid key is detected near the Volkswagen ID.4, the Easy Close system may activate unintentionally and close the trunk lid, potentially causing injury or damage.

• Deactivate Easy Close in the Infotainment system when parking near obstacles such as walls, poles, or garage doors.
• Ensure that no keys are left unattended near the rear of the Volkswagen ID.4.
• Always confirm that no people or objects are within the movement range of the trunk lid.
• Never hold or place objects in the closing path of the trunk lid.
• Disable Easy Close before performing maintenance or washing the Volkswagen ID.4.
• Turn off the function before installing accessories such as bicycle racks or trailers.

If another trunk function is activated or an obstacle is detected, the Volkswagen ID.4 will automatically interrupt the closing process.

If the Volkswagen ID.4 is locked before activation, the trunk lid will lock automatically once it closes.

If the vehicle is fully unlocked, the trunk lid of the Volkswagen ID.4 will close but remain unlocked.

Troubleshooting

If the trunk lid will not open or close

• Check whether an object is blocking the trunk lid of the Volkswagen ID.4.

  The trunk lid can be operated manually if needed, although additional force may be required.

• If the trunk lid is used repeatedly within a short time, the motor may temporarily deactivate to prevent overheating. During this time, operate the trunk lid manually.
• When towing a trailer, the power trunk function of the Volkswagen ID.4 may be limited to manual operation at the lid.
• If the 12 V battery or fuse is disconnected or faulty, the trunk lid must be closed manually.

If all turn signals flash four times

The last used key is still inside the Volkswagen ID.4.

1. Remove the key and lock the vehicle again.

If the trunk lid is difficult to move

In low temperatures, especially near freezing, the automatic mechanism of the Volkswagen ID.4 trunk lid may not function optimally.

1. Assist the trunk lid manually when opening.

The Easy Open sensor function is not working

• Easy Open operates only when the ignition of the Volkswagen ID.4 is switched off.
• Ensure that the sensors in the rear bumper are clean.
• The trailer hitch may be extended.
• The vehicle may have been retrofitted with a trailer hitch affecting sensor performance.
• In heavy rain or snow, Easy Open may be temporarily disabled to prevent false activation.

For best performance, regularly inspect and maintain the trunk lid sensors and mechanisms of your Volkswagen ID.4 to ensure reliable operation in all conditions.
