Volkswagen ID.4: High Beam Control (Light Assist)

Volkswagen ID.4 2021-2026 (E21) Owner's Manual / High Beam Control (Light Assist)

In the Volkswagen ID.4, the High Beam Control (Light Assist) system automatically switches the high beam headlights on and off to improve visibility while reducing glare for other road users. The system detects oncoming traffic and vehicles ahead, and it also recognizes well-lit urban areas, such as towns, where high beams are not required.

The high beam headlights in the Volkswagen ID.4 are controlled automatically within the limits of the system, depending on traffic, environmental conditions, and driving speed → Volkswagen ID.4 Light Assist automatic high beam activation indicator.

Although the Volkswagen ID.4 Light Assist system enhances convenience and safety, there are situations where the driver must manually control the high beam headlights, as the system may not respond correctly:

  • In poorly illuminated urban areas that the system cannot recognize as towns.
  • On roads with highly reflective traffic signs that may confuse the system.
  • When other road users, such as pedestrians or cyclists, are poorly lit or difficult to detect.
  • On winding roads, steep inclines, or dips where visibility is restricted.
  • When oncoming vehicles are separated by a barrier but still visible above it, such as trucks.
  • During adverse weather conditions, including fog, snow, or heavy rain.
  • When dust, sand, or particles are present in the air.
  • If the windshield is damaged in the camera's viewing area.
  • If the camera field of view is obstructed by dirt, ice, snow, stickers, or condensation.
  • If the camera temporarily switches off due to overheating or prolonged exposure to sunlight.
  • If there is a malfunction in the camera or its power supply.

WARNING

The Light Assist system in the Volkswagen ID.4 may not detect all driving situations accurately and can be limited under certain conditions.

High Beam Control (Light Assist) is only a support system. The driver of the Volkswagen ID.4 is always responsible for selecting the correct lighting. Incorrect use of high beams may blind or distract other road users, increasing the risk of serious or fatal accidents.

  • Always monitor traffic conditions and adjust headlights manually when necessary.
  • Switch off high beams manually if there is any risk of dazzling other drivers.

WARNING

If the camera lens used by the Volkswagen ID.4 Light Assist system is dirty, damaged, or obstructed, system performance may be reduced.

  • Regularly clean the camera viewing area and keep it free from snow, ice, and dirt.
  • Do not cover or obstruct the camera field of vision.
  • Inspect the windshield regularly for damage near the camera area.

For optimal performance and safety, always ensure that the Light Assist system in your Volkswagen ID.4 is functioning correctly and be prepared to take manual control of the headlights when necessary.
