Volkswagen ID.4 2021-2026 (E21) Owner's Manual / How to Recognize that the Front Passenger's Front Airbag is Switched Off

In the Volkswagen ID.4, the status of the front passenger’s front airbag can be clearly identified using the indicator lights. If the airbag is switched off, this is indicated solely by the yellow PASSENGER AIR BAG Volkswagen ID.4 passenger airbag OFF indicator light illuminated indicator light remaining permanently illuminated (→ Indicator light standard airbag system).

If the front passenger’s front airbag in the Volkswagen ID.4 is deactivated but the yellow PASSENGER AIR BAG Volkswagen ID.4 passenger airbag OFF indicator malfunction scenario indicator light does not stay continuously on, or if it appears together with the yellow Volkswagen ID.4 airbag system warning indicator light in instrument cluster indicator light in the instrument cluster display, this may indicate a malfunction within the airbag system.

In such cases, for safety reasons, a child restraint system must not be installed on the front passenger seat. The front passenger airbag in the Volkswagen ID.4 could deploy unexpectedly in the event of an accident → Volkswagen ID.4 airbag deployment risk warning symbol.

DANGER

Always read and follow the critical safety instructions regarding the front passenger’s airbag (→ Child restraints).

DANGER

If the front passenger airbag in the Volkswagen ID.4 is deactivated during an accident, occupants in that seat may suffer severe or fatal injuries. Therefore, the airbag should only be switched off in exceptional circumstances.

  • Deactivate the front passenger airbag only when a rear-facing child restraint is installed in the front passenger seat and only when absolutely necessary.
  • Reactivate the front passenger airbag immediately once the rear-facing child restraint is no longer in use.
  • If applicable, only deactivate the airbag when the front passenger backrest is folded down, depending on vehicle equipment, and reactivate it as soon as the backrest is returned to its normal position.
  • Always switch the airbag on or off only when the ignition is switched off to prevent system damage.
  • As the driver of the Volkswagen ID.4, ensure that the key switch is always in the correct position.

WARNING

If there is a malfunction in the airbag system of the Volkswagen ID.4, the airbag may not deploy correctly, may fail to deploy, or may deploy unexpectedly, which can lead to severe or fatal injuries.

  • If a fault is suspected, have the airbag system inspected immediately by qualified professionals at an authorized Volkswagen service facility.
  • Never install a child restraint system on the front passenger seat if there is any indication of an airbag system malfunction.

WARNING

If the remote control key or emergency key remains inserted in the key switch while driving the Volkswagen ID.4, vibrations may cause it to rotate unintentionally. This could activate the front passenger airbag unexpectedly and lead to serious injuries.

  • Always remove the vehicle key or emergency key from the key switch before switching on the ignition.

NOTICE

If the key bit is not inserted correctly, it may damage the key-operated switch when turned.

  • Insert the key fully into the switch until you feel resistance for the second time.

NOTICE

If the vehicle key or emergency key remains in the key switch when closing the front passenger door, this may damage interior components such as the door trim, instrument panel, or the key mechanism in the Volkswagen ID.4.

  • Always remove the key from the switch before closing the front passenger door.
